I Remember When ... Page 7

I remember in the spring of '62 in the sixth grade at Travis, we did a unit on Mexico and Miss Boss taught us how to count to 10 in Spanish. In college, I took 2 semesters of Spanish and I don't remember a thing. But, I've always remembered how to count to 10.
Between 5 to 10 years ago, my mother and I ran into Ms. Boss several times shopping in the White House in Beaumont. I told her what an impression she had made on me and how much I had learned from her. She actually remembered me, I think because she remembered my mom. I couldn't believe she was still around, but she didn't look any older than my mom, and she looked exactly the same, of course with white hair instead of blond.

I sent an e-mail to my Travis buddies for help in remembering the names of the classmates in our train photo from Mrs. Louvier's first grade class. I got to thinking that this is our 50 year anniversary of being first graders. I received help from Lyn Frasier, Georgia Peterson, Rebecca Carr, & Sara Little. THANKS so much. Check out the photo in Class Photos page 1. The following are some of their responses to the plea for help in naming those little cuties

What an endeavor. My mind is not responding to the faces. I do recognize the faces, but these are kids that didn't stay long. You know - I never thought as a kid about those classmates that weren't there long. I think we had many students that moved in and out the Long Apartments near Travis. This goes back so far. Aren't we cute?!! Thanks for researching all of this. Tell your parents "Hi" for me. They put up a lot from us. We always went to your house for things

I read where you were looking for names for our first grade train ride. I found a book we did in first grade that was titled "My life." It has names of the people in our class. There were 33 names listed! There is no way teachers now could handle 33 in their classroom. I am a Kindergarten Aide at Helena Park in Nederland and it is very difficult for the teacher to handle 20 - 23 students much less 33! I hope this list helps. It might jog some memory.

You guys sure have some memory cells ... Are you sure you are our age??? I am with Pat Patrick ... my first grade teacher was Mrs. Franklin at Lee Elementary. I remember we were in the Christmas play and I wore bells on my slip (hey, it was Christmas). I refused to take them off like Mrs. Beshlin, the music teacher, wanted me to. (My mom made that special slip for me.) So, I had to go to the principal's office and I cried and cried and cried. I remember sitting behind Kay Campbell in the auditorium and Mike Becker would play/tease Kay and pull her long hair ... Kay was always the popular one!
*2nd grade???? I have to think ...
*3rd grade teacher was easy ... Mrs. Glover ... hard to stay out of her black book
*4th grade ... Mrs. Honea
*5th grade ... Mrs. Reynolds(?)
*6th grade ... Mrs. DeSteiger(sp?)
Sheila Irby's mom was a teacher there.
Does anyone from Lee Elementary remember going outside and cleaning the erasers on the side of the building? We gave the erasers to the coach that spit all the time.Gee, the things we remember!
We used to play kickball and never cared about the temperature ... just to see how fast we could run or how far we could kick the ball ... I think Carmen Babin and David Nicholas lived across the street from the school. Donald DeLee lived on DeLee Street.
Gee ... I remember being jealous of Karen Giles at Lee ... cuz she could color so well. She stayed in the lines and shaded so neatly! Sandy Ellis ... do you remember at Edison you were the best runner in the 1 mile? I couldn't ever catch you.
